We use Big Tech services every day, often without thinking. It's convenient, cheap or even free, and seem harmless. But the moment you become dependent on a single provider for critical technology, you unknowingly give up a significant part of your control. And that control doesn’t just apply to your own data, but also to the data of your customers, citizens or users.

But what happens when that provider suddenly changes the rules? Or worse; uses your data in ways you never intended? Back in 2016, we warned in a keynote on “privacy and security” that data subject to U.S. law is not safe. Thanks to legislation like the Patriot Act and the Cloud Act, U.S. authorities have broad access to any data stored on U.S. servers, even if those servers are physically located in Europe. At the time, most people considered this a distant or theoretical issue. But now, with Trump’s resurgence and renewed attention to digital sovereignty, the realization is finally sinking in: our dependence on Big Tech is a risk.

Strangely enough, we can thank Trump for finally putting data sovereignty and privacy on the agenda ;-)

Software doesn’t have to come from Silicon Valley to be trustworthy or innovative. In fact, it’s here in Europe where technology is being developed with real values like transparency, collaboration and public oversight.
